Fill a front window with hanging silver stars, tiny background stars and enough shimmer to make the glass look like mission control.
Count Binface Window Stars is a small, mock-official act of civic daftness: visible, removable, cheap and much easier than explaining Earth politics to a bin.

You’ll need
- scrap cardboard
- foil
- thread or cotton

How to make it
- Draw and cut several stars in at least three sizes.
- Cover the largest stars with foil and leave some smaller stars white or silver.
- Tape thread to the back of the hanging stars.
- Fix the threads to the inside top of the window frame.
- Add smaller stars directly to the inside glass or surrounding card.
- Step outside and rebalance any gaps.

Make it more ridiculous
- Add one ringed planet among the stars.
- Hang stars at different depths for a 3D look.
- Use a dark curtain behind them for extra contrast.
Keep it sensible
- Hang decorations inside your own window or a window you have permission to use, and keep curtains, handles and visibility safe.
- Use private property or get permission first.
- Keep exits, pavements, roads, shared spaces and safety notices clear.

Photo tip
Photograph close enough to show the joke, but crop out faces, house numbers, car plates, street signs, private letters and neighbours who did not volunteer for intergalactic administration.
How to remove it
- Peel tape slowly rather than yanking it.
- Untie string and save reusable pieces.
- Recycle clean card and paper.
- Wipe any chalk pen or residue with a suitable cleaner for that surface.
Tiny version
Make one handwritten A4 sign, place it somewhere you control, enjoy the tiny constitutional incident for five minutes, then remove it cleanly.
Big version
Build a three-part display with a headline sign, a fictional department, props, and one completely unnecessary label for maximum bureaucratic nonsense.
Why it works
This is the simplest way to copy the space-display feeling from the photos: lots of handmade foil stars suspended at different heights, with smaller paper stars dotted between them. The repetition makes the whole window feel deliberate rather than random.
Use cardboard stars covered in foil for the big pieces, then add white or silver paper stars in the background. Hang them from cotton or thread taped to the inside top frame so nothing touches the outside of the glass.
The display works best when the stars vary in size. Put the largest stars near the edges, keep the middle readable, and leave enough clear glass that the window still looks like a window rather than a meteor incident.
