Doors

Intergalactic Door Stars

Scatter lightweight foil stars over a front door for the simplest possible version of the space takeover.

Intergalactic Door Stars is a small, mock-official act of civic daftness: visible, removable, cheap and much easier than explaining Earth politics to a bin.

Best for

  • windows
  • bins
  • porches
  • gardens or any surface you own

You’ll need

  • cereal-box card
  • foil
  • removable tack or tape
  • star template
  • optional short bunting strand

How to make it

  1. Cut five to nine stars in different sizes.
  2. Cover them with foil and flatten the edges.
  3. Place larger stars on door panels and smaller stars around them.
  4. Keep locks, handles, numbers, bells and letterboxes clear.
  5. Press tape lightly so the stars can be removed without marks.

Copy this wording

  • Doorway to cardboard space.
  • Please knock in orbit.
  • Front door sector: cheerful.
  • Stars temporarily in residence.

Make it more ridiculous

  • Add a short space bunting strand above the door.
  • Put one ringed planet near the bottom panel.
  • Make a matching star for a plant pot.

Keep it sensible

  • Do not cover locks, handles, letterboxes, numbers, peepholes, bells or fire-safety features.
  • Use private property or get permission first.
  • Keep exits, pavements, roads, shared spaces and safety notices clear.

For more boundaries that keep the nonsense cheerful, read the Tiny Rulebook or the guide.

Photo tip

Photograph close enough to show the joke, but crop out faces, house numbers, car plates, street signs, private letters and neighbours who did not volunteer for intergalactic administration.

How to remove it

  • Peel tape slowly rather than yanking it.
  • Untie string and save reusable pieces.
  • Recycle clean card and paper.
  • Wipe any chalk pen or residue with a suitable cleaner for that surface.

Tiny version

Make one handwritten A4 sign, place it somewhere you control, enjoy the tiny constitutional incident for five minutes, then remove it cleanly.

Big version

Build a three-part display with a headline sign, a fictional department, props, and one completely unnecessary label for maximum bureaucratic nonsense.

Why it works

The door in the image proves that one repeated shape can transform a plain surface. A few silver stars and a short bunting strand are enough.

Cut stars from cereal-box card, cover them with foil, and attach them with small loops of removable tape or tack. Put larger stars on flat panels and smaller ones around them so the arrangement looks scattered but intentional.

If you add bunting above the door, keep it inside your own doorway and firmly tied. The door still needs to behave like a door, even if it has briefly become a portal to cardboard space.
